Holiday Carol Writing Contest
Young voices. Original melodies. Holiday spirit.
Each year, the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra invites 4th–6th grade students to share their creativity in our Holiday Carol Writing Contest. This unique opportunity gives young composers the chance to have their original holiday-themed carol professionally orchestrated and performed live by the FWCO at our beloved Teddy Bear Concert. Whether written by an individual, small group, or an entire class, every carol brings a new melody and message to life, honoring the spirit of the season.
How to Participate
Who can enter: Students in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade (individuals, groups, or full classes).
What to submit: An original melody with lyrics, written in carol form. The theme should relate to Winter holidays — Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year, or general seasonal themes.
Support: Teachers may help with notation and formatting, but the creative work must come from the students.
Format: Submissions must include a melody line with lyrics clearly matched to the music. Digital or scanned versions are welcome.
Judging criteria: Entries are judged on melody, lyrics, and how well the carol can be orchestrated for a full orchestra and voice.
The reward: The winning carol(s) will be professionally orchestrated and performed by the FWCO at the Teddy Bear Concert, with recognition for both students and their teachers.
